Search Engine Submission Tips Last Updated: 2004-04-17 14:31:11
It's not important to keep resubmitting your site to a search engine. One a search engine has your site it will spider it continuously and update listings on its regular schedule. What really can help you is to continuously update your content and add new content.
The most important place to have your site is www.dmoz.org... This data is used with many search engines and duplicated all over the net. Before you submit, look at other sites in category you're submitting to, read their descriptions and choose the keywords in your description wisely. Ask yourself what items you would most like to sell and think will sell well, use these in your descriptions.... ie, say wheelchairs, not mobility aids. It's hard to get the description changed once you submit... do it right the first time.
Also, don't go for any of those offers that will submit to hundreds or thousands of search engines... waste of money... how many have you heard of? My number's about 20 max... stick with worrying about top results in major search engines... that's where the traffic and your customers are. As long as you're in Google and dmoz, and have other sites linking to you, you'll be in all the major engines within a few months.
Search engine optimization (SEO) techniques have changed quite a bit since Nov 2003 Google update. Many SEO firms are still in limbo about how to properly optimize site for google. A site owner needs to be very careful in selecting a SEO firm... to make sure that they only use ethical SEO methods... spam type methods may increase your traffic for a short time but in the end can also ruin your rankings. Google results are not what they used to be... I am predicting shift in Google's popularity. Best SEO advice right now is to create a well functioning site with clear indication of the topic of each page, relevant back links to the site or deep pages, plenty of text, absolutely no spam, updated content and add new content and pages often.
Best thing for a website owner to do is get in dmoz and search around net for quality sites with topics related to yours that may want to trade links with you. Getting others to link to you will likely get you added to every search engine that they are added to, and may increase the relevancy of your site, which will inturn increase your rankings. Also, it is extremely important to have relevant title tags on each page, a relevant meta description, and relevant headings on each page. You might also consider pay per click programs as they will give your site much more exposure.
